Estimate your score for the Subclass 189, 190 and 491 skilled migration points test. Every band and point value below matches the Department of Home Affairs points table, current as of August 2026.
Age is assessed on the day the Department issues your invitation, not the day you submit your EOI. Applicants aged 45 or over cannot apply for the points-tested skilled visas.
Competent English is the baseline requirement to lodge an EOI and scores no bonus points. Figures shown are IELTS bands — PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET and Cambridge C1/C2 have their own equivalent scores; check the Department's English language pages for the exact figures for your test.
Employment must be in your nominated occupation or a closely related occupation, within the 10 years before invitation, at 20+ hours a week. Overseas and Australian experience combined are capped at 20 points.
Only your highest qualification counts — points don't add up across multiple qualifications.
Unlike the other factors, partner points are not locked in at EOI stage — if your relationship status changes before your invitation, this item may not be awarded.
All three visas use the same base points table — the only difference is the nomination or sponsorship factor added on top.
Skilled Independent visa. No sponsorship needed — you apply directly if your occupation is on the MLTSSL and you meet the points test.
Skilled Nominated visa. Requires nomination by a state or territory government. Occupation must be on the MLTSSL or STSOL.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa. Requires state/territory nomination or eligible family sponsorship. MLTSSL, STSOL or ROL.
65 points is a minimum, not a guarantee. Reaching 65 lets your Expression of Interest enter the SkillSelect pool — invitations depend on how your score ranks against other applicants and how many places are available for your occupation that round. Competitive occupations often need scores well above 65 to actually receive an invitation.
Your occupation must be on the relevant skilled occupation list — MLTSSL for the 189, MLTSSL or STSOL for the 190, and MLTSSL, STSOL or ROL for the 491 — and you need a suitable skills assessment for that occupation.
Overseas and Australian skilled employment are capped at 20 points combined — even if your individual totals add up to more than that, only 20 points are ever awarded for employment.
Age, English, work experience and qualifications are all assessed on the day you're invited to apply — not the day you submit your EOI. Partner points are the one exception and can be affected by a change in relationship status.
