3. The 6-Month Application Window Is Absolute

You must lodge your 485 application within 6 months of your official course completion date — calculated from when your results were officially notified or your course formally concluded, whichever is later. This deadline runs regardless of whether your student visa has technically expired, but Home Affairs grants no extensions and exercises no discretion. Missing it by even a single day invalidates the application entirely, with no appeal path back into this particular visa.

4. No Skills Assessment Required — But English and Age Rules Still Apply

Since 1 July 2022, 485 applicants no longer need a skills assessment from a relevant assessing authority — you apply directly to Home Affairs for the visa itself. That said, two other requirements remain firmly in place:

  • Age limit: generally under 35 at the time of application, though Masters by Research and PhD graduates can apply up to age 49–50, as can Hong Kong and BNO passport holders across all streams
  • English requirement: an in-person English test (IELTS, PTE, or equivalent) taken within the 12 months before you apply — online or at-home test formats are not accepted, and the minimum benchmark sits around IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5
